WHAT YOU’LL EXPECT CATCH DURING THE ALASKA FISHING SEASON
During the summer Alaska fishing season in Southwest Alaska, you’ll be able to explore as many as 30 rivers and streams around Alaska Rainbow Lodge. We feature world-class river-based fishing and fly out daily from the lodge so that you’re able to fish in Alaska in the rivers with the highest concentration of fish. Throughout your stay, you’ll be located right on the Kvichak, which is one of the best spots to cast a line. The Kvichak River is well-known for producing Trophy Rainbow Trout, which means they’re above 30-inches, which is quite rare, even in Alaska. In addition to Rainbow Trout, rivers and streams in Southwest Alaska are teeming with runs of other species of fish, and we’ll go over the most popular.

THE VARIETY OF SPECIES
The prime salmon Alaska fishing season for King begins in June, which means where there are King, there are Dolly Varden and Trophy Rainbow Trout. During this time, you can also expect to have Alaska fishing opportunities to battle with Arctic Char, Grayling, as well as Sockeye in Southwest Alaska. While Kings frequent the area during early June, Sockeye makes an entrance shortly after, and both are mostly gone by August. In addition to fishing for Trophy Rainbow Trout, the river is known for having a tremendous Sockeye salmon run.
BRISTOL BAY MARINE LIFE
Five species of Pacific salmon reside in the waters of Bristol Bay— king, coho, chum, sockeye and pink. Eight rivers drain into Bristol Bay and provide a variety of species aside from salmon including Dolly Varden, rainbow trout, grayling, lake trout, northern pike, and arctic char. While in Alaska there are many other marine mammals you’ll pass by while out in Bristol Bay fishing. Don’t be surprised when you see a river otter close to shore as well as beavers, walruses, and seals splashing about. The waters of the bay in Alaska are also home to larger marine mammals such as whales and orcas. Above the water, you’ll find migratory birds flying overhead, waterfowl, and bald eagles. The Naknek River is a 35-mile stream that feeds into Kvichak Bay and is best known for its vibrant sockeye population. The Naknek headwaters originate within the Katmai National Park and Preserve, meaning your catch comes from a protected and pristine environment that provides an unscathed breeding ground for trophy salmon making their way towards your fly.

The King salmon run is normally the thickest during the last half of June and the first week of July. The tail end of the spawn also makes for great open water fishing.
Seasons for Salmon
Though there are usually a few different prized catches lurking beneath the waves, each salmon has a little bit of a different season. Being located near Bristol Bay, we tend to get the early portion of the salmon run every year. Salmon will swim from the saltwater sea every four years to the fresh waters they were born in to spawn and restart the cycle. Pink Salmon, Chum, and Sockeye salmon don’t tend to come into season until late July and finish out the end of our season strong into August and even September.
Kings, Sockeye, and Moving with the Seasons
The Sockeye Salmon is an early season salmon arriving in late June, but King Salmon tend to lead the charge closer to the beginning of June. Having availability to so many different waterways and the vast Bristol Bay, we have an advantage in finding areas that these monster catches migrate to as the seasons progress. As all of the salmon move further into the freshwater, each of the fourteen neighboring rivers allows us to reach areas further inland to keep up with them during their upstream fight to spawning grounds.

We also have access to 14 different waterways that allow us to follow fish to where they migrate throughout the seasons. NUSHAGAK RIVER
The Nushagak is a 275-mile, Class I river known for its massive salmon runs beginning in early June. It is estimated to produce nearly 50 percent of the world’s wild salmon and serves as a major source of commercial, subsistence, and sport fishing activities that support the state and local economies.
A Unique Experience
The Nushagak River is a river in southwest Alaska, United States. It begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest 450 km to Nushagak Bay, an inlet of Bristol Bay, east of Dillingham, Alaska. The Mulchatna River is a major tributary. Other navigable tributaries include the Nuyakuk River and the King Salmon River.
Flowing south away from the Kuskokwim Mountains and out of the Nushagak Hills and into Nushagak Bay of the world famous Bristol Bay region, this river represents one of the most important fishery habitats in southwest Alaska. For 275 miles this river runs as a Class I river that is well suited for families that have good wilderness camping skills and enjoy interactions with local native peoples as it flows past several native villages. Scattered forest of spruce and poplar confine the river, with open tundra outside the river corridor. High river bluffs make short hikes with a view quite easy. Huge runs of King Salmon, Pink Salmon, Coho Salmon, Chum Salmon and Sockeye Salmon make their way upriver beginning in early June, soon after ice breakup is complete. Trout, Char, Dollies and Grayling fill the river, as well, making this is a sport fisherman's paradise.

As the new year begins, we are already planning, booking, and dreaming of next season. Now our guests and future guests can start to plan and target their specific species of salmon or trout for the summer weeks. Now is the time to start planning which week or weeks you prefer to join us. For starters, nothing quite beats the first week or two out on the open water after a long winter. The first two weeks are for hungry spring rainbows. Late spring is game on for giant king salmon which stretches into mid-June to about the first week of July.
There’s great late spring/early summer opportunities for some hot topwater mousing for trophy rainbow trout as well! Nothing quite like stripping in line watching the topwater action of the mouse flies and these enormous rush that comes from a giant strike! Mousing takes place the first two to three weeks of June.
Then the sockeye salmon arrive in droves usually around the first week of July and sure to be an action-packed week right from the get go. When the sockeye are running strong, our expert guides will get you dialed in immediately and get you on some gear-grinding, line-stripping fresh sockeyes. It’s such a treat to our guests when we can have them limited out on sockeye within the first couple days and the guests knowing they can bring home their bounty. You can prefer to have your salmon packed fresh or smoked.
NOTE : For die-hard Trophy Rainbow fishers, the last week of August through the end of September is exponentially the very best that Bristol Bay and the surrounding watersheds and tributaries can offer. Our resident Rainbow are available at any time during our season but come September, the Big Guns come out of the shadows. we are talking HOGS here!

This past off-season Alaska Rainbow Lodge has done extensive remodeling of the lodge, cabins, and accommodations. Our Bristol Bay lodge offers a variety of housing options so that you can enjoy an ideal fishing experience. The beautiful Alaska land on the banks of the Kvichak River that Alaska Rainbow Lodge is situated on is home to a 4,600 square foot main building and three duplex cabins. The larger main lodge is made up of five bedrooms which sleep two each, as well as a spacious kitchen, dining room, luxurious lounge, and living room area. If you prefer more privacy when you return to the lodge from your days reeling in Alaska trophy fish, choose from one of our cozy duplex cabins. These accommodations are comfortably carpeted and soundproofed so you can experience pure relaxation. Take advantage of the full private bath and fully controllable heating and air conditioning. Our lodge and cabins offer fishers the most modern rooming available.
After a restful nights sleep in one of our comfortable queen or twin sized beds you will awake to hot coffee, juice, or tea delivered to your room. A long hot shower in your private bath, a hearty breakfast in our lodge, more hot coffee and you will be more than ready to go fishing! Your guides will meet you at the dock where they have already loaded the planes and will be waiting to help you load up and head out for the day. You will safely fly with your guide to your destination on a short flight and embark on your days adventure! Spend the morning targeting and catching big fish, walking with giant grizzly bears, watching bald eagles swoop and catch fish, and enjoying the serenity of Alaska. For lunch your guide will prepare you a hot meal on the river of either fresh caught fish, or hot soup and sandwiches prepared fresh, served and enjoyed in the most scenic areas of the World! BROOKS FALLS
A Unique Experience
Brooks River offers tremendous fishing opportunities for rainbow trout, arctic char, and salmon. Its run of sockeye salmon, in particular, also attract one of the greatest gatherings of brown bears on earth. No matter when you visit, fishing the Brooks River requires extra care and responsibility to protect people, wildlife, and the experience.
In the Brooks River, mature sockeye salmon are absent for most the year. The quiet of winter slowly gives way to the abundance of summer. Salmon are the foundation of this change. Typically, salmon first arrive at the mouth of the Brooks River in mid June, but they don’t start to move into the river in large numbers until late June. The peak of the sockeye salmon run in the Naknek River watershed, which the Brooks River is part of, is in early July.
During their migration, salmon don’t move into the Naknek River or Brooks River in consistent numbers. In Bristol Bay, commercial fishing will periodically intercept fish and outgoing tides will slow their entry in the Naknek River. The greatest numbers of salmon move in the Naknek River during high tides. These factors influence the relative abundance of fish in the Brooks River--few fish at Brooks Falls on some days and many fish on others. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game carefully manages the Bristol Bay sockeye salmon fishery to ensure that enough fish are allowed to escape the fishery and run up river to sustain the population.

FALL FLY FISHING IN ALASKA: KVICHAK RIVER RAINBOW TROUT
Fall is an excellent time for fly fishing in Alaska. First of all, the crisp autumn weather is reasonably comfortable. The fall colors will begin to peak, offering a diverse array of reds and oranges across the landscape—plus, no mosquitos. Secondly, there tends to be less pressure from eager anglers as the tourist season wanes. Most importantly, however, fall marks a heightened abundance of Alaskan rainbow trout coming through the Kvichak River. Some of the world’s largest specimens make their way from Bristol Bay and on to our hooks as winter approaches. It is not uncommon at Alaska Rainbow Lodge to see guests consistently reel in rainbows exceeding 28 inches. With that in mind, we’ll give you an inside look at one of our most coveted fall bounties: the Alaskan rainbow trout.
Part of the reason why the fly fishing in Alaska is some of the best on Earth is that Bristol Bay’s pristine waters and the surrounding area make for an incredible habitat. Thanks to the remote nature of a nearly unscathed ecosystem and mindful conservation practices, the typical conditions in our slice of paradise lend themselves to enabling anglers a real chance at a trophy Alaskan rainbow trout. Native throughout Alaska’s coastal rivers, rainbow trout are an anadromous fish species, meaning they can thrive in salt and freshwater systems. Furthermore, rainbows that leave the sea to return to the river are commonly referred to as steelhead. However, our Bristol Bay variety tends to stick around the river, meaning they are true inland residents. Unlike their salmonid cousins, Alaskan rainbow trout can spawn more than once, further adding to their abundance.

It has been an incredible opening to the 2023 season. The lodge has undergone a fairly serious facelift this spring with new furniture in the bedrooms and an entirely new dining room. We have also upgraded all lodge rooms to 2 brand new queen beds so all guests can sleep and relax in equal comfort.
Fishing has been fantastic with lots of healthy rainbows caught at Big Ku, Kulik, Moraine, and Brooks. We have also been enjoying a healthy Sockeye run with fishermen catching limits before lunch and spending the afternoons chasing rainbows and grayling. Lots of full fish boxes heading home! With the salmon the bears have showed up in force at brooks falls providing awesome photo opportunities, and we will be seeing them at Moraine and Funnel creek in the near future.
We have had a large number of guests who have come this year already locking in their spots for 2024, and the calendar is beginning to fill up. If you are looking to book in 2024 and have a specific date in mind please contact me as soon as possible to lock in your spots. I don’t want anyone to miss out! If you come yearly please let me know if you are good with your current dates or if you would like to move to a different week if it is available.
Lastly if any of you have not yet checked a fall trophy rainbow trout off of your list we have availability during the peak season September of this year. Sept 15-22 is un-beatable for monster rainbows on the Kvichak flats and the Naknek river. Not to mention awesome late season fishing at Brooks, Kulik, and Talarik creek. Lets go find that 33 inch Rainbow!

Spotlight River - Brooks River
A Unique Experience
Brooks River offers tremendous fishing opportunities for rainbow trout, arctic char, and salmon. Its run of sockeye salmon, in particular, also attract one of the greatest gatherings of brown bears on earth. No matter when you visit, fishing the Brooks River requires extra care and responsibility to protect people, wildlife, and the experience.
Fishing In Bear Country
The sheer number of bears, their movements, and behaviors influence most activities at Brooks Camp. The waters of Katmai are a challenging and rewarding place to fish. A splashing fish sounds like food to a bear. Bears will often move in your direction to investigate a fish on a line. Always be prepared to cut or break your line, so that you can free the fish and move out of the water until the bear passes. Never let a bear acquire a fish from you.
It is easy to become so engaged in fishing, that you forget to be alert for bears. They are surprisingly quiet and difficult to see in dense grass or tall brush, so always have someone spot bears for you. At minimum, keep 50 yards between yourself and all bears. Stop fishing and move away well before a bear approaches within 50 yards, or you may find yourself in a situation with a fish on the line and a bear in pursuit.

Last summer I has the pleasure of spending a week at Alaska Rainbow Lodge..fly fishing, bear encounters and lots of float plane flying in the deHavilland DHC-2 Beavers. Trip of a lifetime! To celebrate the adventure, two paintings were completed a few months ago. As they now hang in the lodge, they can finally be shared here.

Essential Items for Fishing in Alaska
Think back to your early days of fishing—the careless summers of your youth. You and your cohorts ran around from spot to spot as hours turned into days, with nothing more than a hook, line, rod, and worms. Back then, you were just killing time, seeking refuge from mowing lawns and parental supervision. As much as we cherish those carefree days, most of us weren’t chasing salmon and trout, let alone fly fishing. Fly fishing gear is more involved than what we used as kids, and to add to the battle is the level of patience and commitment necessary to hone your skills. To help acquaint you with your soon-to-be new favorite pastime, we compiled a shortlist of fly fishing gear essentials to get you started.
Flies and Waders
Flies and waters are just as important to fly fishing as your rod and reel. Much like the items mentioned above, you don’t need to spend a lot of money to get decent products. You’ll add more flies to your fly fishing gear as you become more acclimated to the sport, so right now, a standard assortment of flies will suffice. As far as waders go, an entry-level pair will get the job done; however, you may want to spend a little more on your second set.
Polarized Sunglasses and Fishing Hat
Protection from the heat and sun is crucial, even while fly fishing in Alaska. Polarized sunglasses are great for fishing because they offer protection, while also providing visibility just under the water’s surface by deflecting glare. Fishing hats will increase the effectiveness of your sunglasses while also adding extra protection from the sun and pesky insects like black flies, gnats, and mosquitoes—the last thing any angler wants to be bombarded by bugs while perfecting their cast.
Rod and Reel
A rod and reel are obviously necessary for fly fishing in Alaska, but the biggest takeaway is that you don’t need to break your budget to obtain a decent setup. Finding a rod that works best for you is the most important aspect when starting. It’s recommended that beginners commence their foray with a medium action rod for both stability and feeling bites. When it comes to reels, the best rule of thumb is, bigger fish need bigger reels.
Spotlight River - Nushagak River
The Nushagak is a 275-mile, Class I river known for its massive salmon runs beginning in early June. It is estimated to produce nearly 50 percent of the world’s wild salmon and serves as a major source of commercial, subsistence, and sport fishing activities that support the state and local economies. Flowing south away from the Kuskokwim Mountains and out of the Nushagak Hills and into Nushagak Bay of the world famous Bristol Bay region, this river represents one of the most important fishery habitats in southwest Alaska. For 275 miles this river runs as a Class I river that is well suited for families that have good wilderness camping skills and enjoy interactions with local native peoples as it flows past several native villages. Scattered forest of spruce and poplar confine the river, with open tundra outside the river corridor. High river bluffs make short hikes with a view quite easy. Huge runs of King Salmon, Pink Salmon, Coho Salmon, Chum Salmon and Sockeye Salmon make their way upriver beginning in early June, soon after ice breakup is complete. Trout, Char, Dollies and Grayling fill the river, as well, making this is a sport fisherman's paradise. As it progresses downriver it joins other important fish habitat rivers, such as the King Salmon, the Mulchatna and Nuyakuk Rivers. The upper river from the confluence with the Chichitnok River is especially scenic with hills to hike and small streams to fish. This river is suitable for all watercraft with rafts and inflatables being the most common boats to take.
Know Your Fishing Seasons
Seasons for Salmon
Though there are usually a few different prized catches lurking beneath the waves, each salmon has a little bit of a different season. Being located near Bristol Bay, we tend to get the early portion of the salmon run every year. Salmon will swim from the saltwater sea every four years to the fresh waters they were born in to spawn and restart the cycle. Pink Salmon, Chum, and Sockeye salmon don’t tend to come into season until late July and finish out the end of our season strong into August and even September.
Kings, Sockeye, and Moving with the Seasons
The Sockeye Salmon is an early season salmon arriving in late June, but King Salmon tend to lead the charge closer to the beginning of June. Having availability to so many different waterways and the vast Bristol Bay, we have an advantage in finding areas that these monster catches migrate to as the seasons progress. As all of the salmon move further into the freshwater, each of the fourteen neighboring rivers allows us to reach areas further inland to keep up with them during their upstream fight to spawning grounds.

When The Calendar Turns
As the temperatures begin to climb again and all of the snow dissipates, our gear is all lined up in preparation for our favorite season. Alaska Rainbow Lodge is always looking forward to the start of a new and exciting season of fishing. While our staff and guides are eager to welcome visitors once more, we are finishing up our spring cleaning and tuning up our boats for all the anglers waiting to visit our Alaska salmon fishing lodges.
When late spring and early summer grow nearer, we get a bit restless as winter has undoubtedly overstayed its welcome. Early summer is when our fishing season finally comes into full swing, and those monster salmon and trophy catches we have all been waiting for begin biting at our lines once more. Salmon begin making their way into our waters, and our lines start to cast out for incredible days on the water. You can also count on finding an array of fish species such as Arctic Char, Rainbow Trout, and Arctic Grayling.

Run Forecasts and Harvest Projections for 2023 Alaska Salmon Fisheries
Fishing Reports
Naknek-Kvichak Rivers
The Naknek-Kvichak is expected to see 18 million sockeye this summer. The Kvichak River is forecasted to have a run of 8 million sockeye, the Naknek could see over 6 million and Alagnak forecast is set at 4 million.
Bristol Bay Region
Bristol Bay should see relatively strong sockeye runs this summer, though they’re not expected to be near last year’s record-breaking run and harvest. Around 50 million sockeye are forecasted to return to the bay, according to the state’s forecast for the 2023 fishing season. The total escapement is projected to reach 13 million with around 37 million fish available to harvest. That’s a good deal lower than last year, and it’s also lower than the average over the last 10 years. But looking a little further back, this summer's run is still expected to be 40% above the bay’s long-term average.The strength of the salmon returns varies across river systems, and the Nushagak District, on the west side of the bay, has seen some of the biggest sockeye runs and highest harvests in recent years.

There are several items to consider bringing with you, depending on your preferences and how long you’ll be staying (some guests continue their Alaskan adventure after visiting with us). However, rather than make an extensive list of necessitie, we decided just to make a shortlist of a few general travel items:

History of Bristol Bay and Sockeye Salmon
Sockeye play an intricate role in the Bristol Bay ecosystem by not only bending your rods and filling your freezers with delicious meat, but by nourishing everything in the watersheds they inhabit. Most Sockeye Salmon are hatched in rivers that are fed by a lake where they travel to after hatching. They will feed and grow until big enough to make one of the greatest migratory journeys ever! As the juvenile sockeye (smolt) make their way from the lakes downstream towards the ocean, rainbow trout lay in wait and gorge on them and fatten up as the sockeye swim by. Whales and seals wait at the Bay to greet the small salmon fry as they make their way into the saltwater. They spend 3 years in the ocean surviving, eating zooplankton and growing until returning to the freshwater rivers. These persistent and powerful fish will travel up to 1600km (that’s almost 1,000 miles!) to spawn in the same riverbeds where they were hatched in.

The 2023 commercial salmon harvest forecast is for 122 million pink salmon, 48 million sockeye salmon, 16 million chum salmon, and 3 million coho salmon. If realized, the forecasted 2023 total Alaska commercial salmon harvest will be approximately 189 million fish.

Howdy Guests and Friends of Alaska Rainbow Lodge!
We hope you have all had an incredible winter season and are ready to get back out on the water in Bristol Bay this summer. This will be Alaska Rainbow Lodge’s 40th year in existence on the banks of the Kvichak River! We have some news and updates about the upcoming season and I wanted to take this opportunity to let y’all know about them.
First off we are extremely excited about our new website built by Justin Graddy at Buffalo Media Group. Justin will also be visiting the lodge several times this summer to get us new photos and video. If you are lucky enough to visit during one of those weeks be ready for some awesome shots. Justin has a way of making everyone look like a superhero. I am incredibly excited to see what he comes up with.
Next up we are starting phase one of our lodge remodel this spring. There will be lots of new furniture and decorations for you to enjoy in the lodge as well as guest rooms. This will be followed by new carpets and wall treatments in most of the rooms the following year. We are committed to keeping the lodge updated and comfortable for the next 40 years of guests.
In staff news I am excited to announce that our entire guide crew from the end of last season will be returning for the 2023 season. I could not ask for a better and more professional group of guides to take care of our guests out on the river. Our chef Jerry will be returning for his third year at ARL making sure that we continue to have the best food in all of AK. Erica and Ashley will be returning as part of the inside staff to make sure everything you need in the lodge is taken care of.
Lastly as many of you know this will be the last summer for our long time Chief Pilot Ken Strickler. Ken has been keeping all of us safe and the airplanes maintained for over 20 years. Ken will be at the lodge for our first month of operation in order to help ease the transition. Ollie O’Halloran, who was flying beaver 43446 for us last season, will be taking over the chief pilot duties, and our long time mechanic Nathan Featherston will be moving up into the pilot seat of 283AR.
I have had several guests approach me wanting to do something for Ken as a thank you for his many years of keeping us all safe at ARL. If any of you would like to contribute to Ken’s retirement present please contact me directly at chip@alaskarainbowlodge.com or call 214-543-6220. I can collect them from everyone and present them to Ken on his farewell dinner which will take place on July 7.

The allure of fly fishing in Alaska revolves around three factors: beautiful scenery, a plentiful fish population, and unrivaled seclusion. The best time to head out to Alaska to fish is somewhere between June to September as it is the peak season for salmon fishing. During late June, king salmon start to migrate into the Naknek and Nushagak rivers, where the king salmon run peaks. It is followed by sockeye salmon peaking in early to mid July in the Naknek and Alagnak rivers. You can also expect to catch Arctic char, grayling, and northern pike during June. It’s no secret that the Nushagak River offers the best king salmon fishing in Alaska so there will also be an abundance of chum, pink, and silver salmon in late summer. Upon landing in King Salmon, AK one of our friendly and experienced pilots will greet you in one of our three Beaver de Havilland float planes and fly you and all you baggage to our lodge on the Kvichak River about 30 miles away. After your short, but beautiful flight to the lodge, our professional and courteous guides will meet you at the dock where you will be escorted to your rooms and the main lodge.
While you enjoy a cocktail from our open bar, excitedly unpack your baggage, or even join one our guides out front for some casting lessons, our staff will introduce themselves and get you situated with fishing licenses and whatever else you may need to help you feel at home.
One of our guides will sit down with you and your group to discuss the following days adventure and where you want to fish. Unlike many lodges in this area we cater to our guests and what they want to do! With over 30 rivers and streams to target big fish in, 3 floatplanes, Rafts and over 40 jet boats we will pick a place together that best suits you and your fishing desires.

After a restful nights sleep in one of our comfortable queen or twin sized beds you will awake to hot coffee, juice, or tea delivered to your room. A long hot shower in your private bath, a hearty breakfast in our lodge, more hot coffee and you will be more than ready to go fishing! Your guides will meet you at the dock where they have already loaded the planes and will be waiting to help you load up and head out for the day. You will safely fly with your guide to your destination on a short flight and embark on your days adventure! Spend the morning targeting and catching big fish, walking with giant grizzly bears, watching bald eagles swoop and catch fish, and enjoying the serenity of Alaska. For lunch your guide will prepare you a hot meal on the river of either fresh caught fish, or hot soup and sandwiches prepared fresh, served and enjoyed in the most scenic areas of the World! Drink in the sights and enjoy a cold beer, soda, wine, Gatorade or water from the ice cooler before getting back to more epic Alaskan fishing.
