When is the “best week” to visit Alaska Rainbow Lodge? We get that question a lot. So here’s the best way to answer it: What do you want to catch? King Salmon? Sockeye Salmon? Silver Salmon? Trophy Rainbows? Dolly Varden? Grayling? Everything?
Here’s the best guideline we can provide to help you make your choice.
If you want to target King Salmon, come to the lodge during the last two weeks of June and no later than the second week of July. The window for Kings is about five weeks and when it’s over, it’s over. Many guests start their trip catching Kings and finish their trip catching Chum, Sockeye, Trout, Grayling and Char.
If you want to target Sockeye, come anytime during the month of July. We have the largest run of Sockeye Salmon in the world on our home river, the Kvichak. You can stand on our dock where literally millions of Sockeye swim past you. This is awesome. And these are some tasty fish, great fighters and great fun to catch.
If you want to target Silver Salmon, come to the lodge in August. If you’ve caught a Silver Salmon on a fly rod, you know how explosive these fish can be. If you’ve never done this, come on up. You’ll never forget it. These fish are ferocious fighters, make wild-long runs, leap into the air and are about as much fun as you’ll ever have with a fly or spinning rod.
If you want to target Trophy Rainbow Trout, you need to come in mid August through mid September. This is when the real monsters come out to feed. And honestly, the later in August you can come, the better your chances of landing a Trophy. This past year, our guests landed multiple 30-inch Rainbows around September 1st and beyond. Friends, these are the ultimate trophies here at the Alaska Rainbow Lodge and we’ve been successful every year over the past 40 years.
Targeting one specific species is just part of the fun at this lodge. We catch all types of fish all day, every day, and that just adds to an incredible week.
